Akarsh, thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to read and comment! I was not familiar with Matthew Syed’s “Rebel Ideas”. However, after reading your article, I agree with other commenters that it sounds interesting enough to add to my ever-growing list of books to read :-).
It made me think about a past experience I had in a group leadership meeting years ago. The head of the group (an intelligent/persuasive/dominant type) shared an idea I thought was preposterous. I was sure I wasn’t the only one.
However, as we were asked one by one to share our thoughts, nobody challenged the idea. My turn (and anxiety) was coming, lol! I managed to push past the “group think” and share my honest thoughts. For a moment afterward, it seemed like all the air was sucked out of the room while we waited for the leader to respond.
The response was shocking. It went something like “…well now that you’ve completely killed the idea does anybody else have anything else to say?” To make a long story short, the decision was made to go in another direction.
Note, this was a homogenous group. I do think in some instances in our society homogenous groups are necessary to effect positive change. However, the key within homogenous groups is to embrace a diversity of thought which is often challenging.
Overall, I think your article is great! IMO, the encouragement to “Champion Diversity” is always timely and significant. The contents summary of “Rebel Ideas” you’ve shared in your article is definitely an elevation of the “best stuff”!
Again, thanks for reading and taking the time to comment. And know that I don’t mind your plug :-)!
Much Love & Peace,
CarlaDee
